Exclusive disjunction without implicature

چکیده

For the purposes of this note, I will assume that the Gricean account of scalar implicature is correct. I admit that I don’t have any qualms about making this assumption, since as far as I can tell, the Gricean account is the only game in town. But I thought I should mention it. With this preliminary out of the way, let us proceed to the problem area, and start by considering the following example:

Pragmatic Inferences Related to Logical Terms

Paul Grice was concerned with the way logical terms such as some, or, and and take on extralogical meanings in conversational contexts. To take one example, Grice (1989) described or as having a weak word meaning identical to formal logic’s inclusive disjunction (which is false only in the case where both disjuncts are) but as conveying in conversation a stronger speaker’s meaning corresponding...

Uncorrected Proof. Making Disjunctions Exclusive

This work examines how people interpret the sentential connective “or”, which can be viewed either inclusively (A or B or both) or exclusively (A or B but not both). Following up on prior work concerning quantifiers (Noveck, 2001; Noveck & Posada, 2003; Bott & Noveck, 2004) which shows that the common pragmatic interpretation of “some,” some but not all, is conveyed as part of an effortful step...

At least and Quantity Implicature: Choices and Consequences∗

At least also introduces an implication of speaker ignorance ([9, 1, 12, 19]). (1) conveys that the speaker is uncertain about the exact number of cooks Al hired. In one view, pioneered by Büring ([1]), this ignorance implication is a Gricean Quantity implicature. Büring proposes to capitalize on a striking similarity between at least and disjunction. Just like 1, 3 below lacks the upper-boundi...

Children interpret disjunction as conjunction: Consequences for theories of implicature and child development*

We present evidence that preschool children understand disjunctive sentences as if they were conjunctive. The result holds for matrix disjunctions as well as disjunctions embedded under every. At the same time, there is evidence that children understand or as inclusve disjunction in downwardentailing contexts. We propose to explain this pattern of results by assuming that the child knows the in...

Plurals , possibilities , and conjunctive disjunction ∗

Sentences with disjunction in the scope of a possibility modal often convey something stronger than predicted under the standard semantics for modals and disjunction, roughly paraphrasable in terms of a wide scope conjunction. You may have beer or wine, for example, is naturally understood as conveying that you may have beer and that you may have wine. This ‘puzzle of free choice permission’ (R...
